This is St Columba's Dove. Ecclesiastical embroidery is a huge subject. People have always worked with their hands to the greater glory of their god. The worship room of our local Episcopalian church is well proportioned but very plain. We are looking at producing some textiles which can be used in that room. St Columba is a celtic saint and the major symbols associated with him are a ship and a dove - he also tamed the Loch Ness Monster so I suppose we could incorporate that too! The dove is a very strong symbol for Christians, as well as being a multicultural emblem. |
