Thank you for all the feedback about these designs! As a result of some of your suggestions, I’ve converted the charts into .gif files which should be much faster to download at a small cost in resolution ...

The charts and designs in this free-to-take section are just that! You are very welcome to take a copy of them and to distribute them, as long as you do not alter them. Please see the general SDDS copyright statement for further details on what you can do with them.

SDDS charts are produced with the software package Easy Cross Enterprise. The symbols have been chosen  to make the charts easy to use and to give a monochrome suggestion of the finished design. I suggest that you take a copy of the finished design as well as the chart so that you can use both as you work.

If you use any of these charts please drop me a line. I'd love to see how you interpret them and to hear what you want to use them for.  Please get in touch if you want to stitch for a good cause - we may be able to come to a helpful arrangement.

How to take a copy

The images have been saved as .gif files. Right click on the image, choose "save picture as..." and then save it again as .gif. This should mean that when you print it out the image it still fits neatly onto a single page.

Six Seasonal Cards

The six designs shown here  were originally designed for my mother-in-law and use cards given as a subscription gift by the magazine Cross Stitch Card Shop (they don't seem to have their web pages up yet!). They published first the letter I sent them showing the finished pieces, and then a positive reply from another reader. She says that she too likes to match her stitching to the pretty cards available nowadays.

The original cards are from Craft Creations but will suit any card with a similar aperture. The originals were stitched in two strands of DMC stranded cotton on 14 hpi Aida. The final dimensions of your work will depend on the cloth you choose.

These flower pictures come from my Jen-Shun Collection. They form a Harlequin Group where each card is different and there is an overall harmony of effect. The group looks lovely together but, if you only want to work one or two pictures, it won't look as if something is missing! Rough design sketches were made and one was chosen for each card. Threads were chosen to work with the printing rather than trying to compete with the often bright colours. Sometimes the stitching develops a small part of the original printing, sometimes it offers another reinterpretation of the main theme. Different levels of realism are used to give variety although none of the stitched designs are intended to be photo-realistic.
