The botanical name ANANAS COMOSUS was used to emphasise the traditional nature and formality of the symbolism. The yellows, browns, oranges and golds chosen represent the natural colours of the ripe fruit but specific tones were selected to emphasise warmth and friendliness. The flat green used for the border is intended to pick up a natural leaf colour. Following the way that the texture of the fruit has been abstracted the lettering has worked to give a compact, and ornamental line. The letter I occurs twice in HOSPITALITY and each is formed differently to provide a more flowing effect. The skin texture naturally forms tessellating diamonds and this motif has been repeated within the design area. Colour changes give a three-dimensional effect with the lighting being from the top left as is traditional in still-life pictures. The entire ground of the picture is covered to emphasise the feeling of warmth and solidity this also has the advantage that the mount need not be lined! Alternative pineapple design sketches included blackwork and silhouette versions. The work is designed to be viewed from a distance but will repay closer study. The brown and gold mount provided was chosen to work subtly with the colours used. Additional richness could be added by including Straight Stitch filaments from the centre of each diamond, either in the yellow colour of the lettering or in a flat gold thread. The colour, size and texture of the mount can be changed. The work can be removed from the mount and used as a pincushion top - needlework fancies are a traditional house-warming present. To abstract the design further details could be emphasised with seed beads. |
